Be the Calm in the Wake of bullying – Parents are the anchors!
You’ve read about it in the headlines. You’ve heard about it happening on the news, or worse, it’s happening in your child’s school. You may have even experienced it when you were growing up, or at work. You never expected it to happen to your own child.
Today your heart is broken. You just learned that your precious child is being bullied!
Thoughts are racing through your mind. “S’he’s such a nice kid. How could anyone be so mean to my child?!”
Your heart beats faster, your fists are clenched, your mind is racing: “I’m gonna, I’m gonna…!”
Wait! Stop. Breathe. “A mind at peace, a mind centered and not focused on harming others, is stronger than any physical force in the universe.” (Wayne Dyer)
Read more on the link provided. The link is a handout I created for parents to offer support at a time when you need it most to help break the cycle of bullying. The handout outlines a process for you to use to to get answers and solutions through a nonviolent approach.

Children are great imitators so give them something great to imitate by being a role model for your child, demonstrating how to respond effectively and responsibly. Albert Einstein once said, “Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.” With practice, children will learn to access the tools within their hearts and minds to handle any challenges with the same calm and mindfulness that they observed in us. What a beautiful legacy we are leaving for our children. This is how each of us can contribute to a more compassionate, peaceful, and kinder world.
It is my hope that you will never need to refer to this handout, but just in case, keep it filed where you can pull it out. Research continues to show that ongoing educational programs which help create a healthy social climate in the school is the most effective. A happy and safe school or home doesn’t exist just because we want or expect it to. We must use our hearts and wisdom and experience to create the conditions for such a school or home environment. If your school does not have effective bullying prevention strategies and policies in place, talk to the principal and advocate for change. If you need help, I would be honored and privileged to do so.
